A Search For Significance - Second Episode
When we last left “A Search for Significance” Tamar’s pursuit of significance continued.
When Onan consented to the levirate marriage, Tamar got another opportunity to fulfil what she believed was her purpose. However, her brother-in-law had no intention of fulfilling the requirements of the marriage. “[Because] Onan knew that the child would not be his; so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother (Genesis 38:9).” Tamar’s hope of conceiving a son is dashed as she is only used for sexual pleasure, but denied the possibility of realizing her hope. Onan’s act brings to mind how we can be guilty of the same behavior; in that, while claiming to be Christians, followers of Christ, we pursue our pleasures, and find ourselves denning the fullness of the Holy Spirit in our lives. “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, love of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, ungodly, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power thereof… (2 Tim 3:1-5).” So, let us not be “lip service” Christians, but intentional Christians.
